For most Florida students there is no place like home, but for some students going away to college is preferred.
An interactive map recently released by the Chronicle of Higher Education reveals over 22 percent of freshmen (or 14,270 students) from Florida are heading across the state’s border to attend college. Here are the top five states they going to:
- Alabama: 1,528 students
- New York: 1,154 students
- Georgia: 992 students
- North Carolina: 951 students
- Massachusetts: 851 students
The Chronicle of Higher Education’s interactive map, which uses data from the Department of Education’s Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, shows the migration patterns of freshmen to 4-year public and private institutions across all 50 states over a sixteen-year period from 1998 to 2014.
According to the Chronicle’s analysis, the proportion of freshmen going away to college across the nation has increased from just over 25 percent in 1998 to 31 percent in 2014. However, Florida has managed to keep more of its students in state. The number of Florida students leaving the state to go to college has decreased by nearly 4 percentage points from 1998 to 2014.
