At Florida public schools, the new Common Core State Standards will be fully implemented by the 2014-15 school year. Florida C.A.N. supports the new standards, as part of our state’s broader efforts to prepare more students for college and careers. However, recent controversies over Common Core have provided more heat than light; for example, according to a recent survey, 55 percent of parents do not understand the new standards.
To educate families and educators, as well as hear a range of opinions on the new standards, the Florida Department of Education is hosting three public meetings across the state. The purpose of the meetings is to solicit feedback on the state’s math and English language arts standards.
All events will start with a short presentation by Education Commissioner Pamela Stewart, who will clarify that the purpose of these meetings is to receive input on specific K-12 standards in math and language arts. A descriptive list of specific standards can be found here. Attendees will have the opportunity to comment on specific standards with Department of Education officials on hand to address concerns.
Those not able to attend also have the opportunity to comment online and through email. Florida DOE will give these comments the same consideration as comments provided at the meetings.
