From October to March, Hillsborough County high schools will host workshops to educate Latino students and parents about preparing for college. Called “Pasos al Futuro” these Spanish-only sessions will educate Hispanic families about preparing for college, applying to college, getting financial aid and filling out forms for scholarships. All meetings start at 6:30pm in the school’s auditorium.

“Many students and families are surprised to find out that they qualify for admission to a number of schools and are eligible to get federal scholarships,” says Araseli Martinez-Peña, who works in bilingual guidance services for the Hillsborough Public Schools.

The Florida College Access Network is helping to circulate the word about these valuable workshops. As a partner in Goal 2025, a movement to make sure 60% of Florida working-age residents have a degree or certificate by the year 2025, we are proud to support Pasos al Futuro as a valuable tool in increasing the number of first-generation students who successfully make it into higher education.
